FTC Approves $245 Million Settlement for Fortnite Refunds: How to Claim Yours

FTC Approves $245 Million Settlement for Fortnite Refunds: How to Claim Yours

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced that Fortnite players are eligible for refunds as part of a $245 million settlement with Epic Games. This settlement follows allegations that Fortnite's design led to accidental purchases and that children's data was collected without parental consent. Here’s everything you need to know about the refund process, eligibility, and how to file a claim.

Why Is Fortnite Issuing Refunds?

In 2022, Epic Games was ordered to pay $520 million to settle allegations made by the FTC. Of that, $245 million was allocated for player refunds due to Fortnite’s confusing in-game purchase system.

According to the FTC, Fortnite’s interface made it easy for players—especially children—to accidentally make purchases in situations such as:

  • Waking the game from sleep mode.

  • Navigating a loading screen.

  • Pressing an adjacent button when previewing an item.

Additionally, some Fortnite accounts were locked after users disputed unauthorized charges. As part of the settlement, eligible players can now file claims for refunds.

Who Is Eligible for a Refund?

You may be eligible for a Fortnite refund if any of the following apply to you:

  • You were charged for in-game items you did not intend to purchase between January 2017 and September 2022.

  • A child made unauthorized credit card charges between January 2017 and November 2018.

  • Your Fortnite account was locked after disputing a charge between January 2017 and September 2022.
